Gladiator Slot Review

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was one of the most epic films of the noughties. It helped reignite an interest in the Roman Empire and won many Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. The plot follows Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe), a betrayed general who is sold into slavery where he competes as a gladiator and plots his revenge against the emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

For those of a certain generation, it’s hard to forget the immortal lines: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius: Commander of the Armies of the North; General of the Felix Legions; Loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius; Father to a murdered son; husband to a murdered wife; and I will have my vengeance, in this life, or the next.” And the Gladiator game will help you relive all the action.

Like the film, the Gladiator slots game, released back in 2008 by Playtech, is something of an epic. And, again like the film, the game has stood the test of time. It’s still by far one of the best-looking games, graphically, in the slots genre, and with video sequences and soundtrack clips from the original movie it’s a worthy continuation of the legacy. Additionally, the game features all the major movie characters, including Commodus, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), Grachhus (Derek Jacobi) and Proximo, who was played by the late Oliver Reed.‘

Gladiator’ slots is a 5 reel, 25-payline game with a maximum bet of £50 per line giving a total bet of £1,250 on all 25 lines. The gameplay is similar to other slots games where you bet on any amount of lines from 1-25 (see image below for the available lines) with varying bets depending on how much you want to gamble. There are, however, some notable exceptions.

The expanding scatter concept is what makes the game so interesting. The scatter symbol in Gladiator is that of the Roman coliseum and the ‘Coliseum Bonus’ occurs when three or more of these symbols appear anywhere on the reels (they don’t have to be connected by any of the paylines). The bonus transports you to the gladiators’ cells where you pick stones to reveal bonus prizes – each row of stones has a different set of prizes, from free games to extra wilds (see image below). This bonus can give you a fantastic opportunity to increase your winnings, but cannot be retriggered in any free games you might win.

The other interesting feature is the ‘Gladiator Bonus’ which is triggered by three or more of Maximus’ iconic helmet appearing anywhere on reels 2, 3 and 4. The game will then randomly pick nine helmets of differing values from the inexpensive bronze to the luxurious gold. The values of the nine helmets are then added up and put into your winnings.
