The gladiator symbol is the wild. It can land stacked and when it fills an entire reels it will turn wild and substitute for all the other symbols, except the scatter and bonus symbols, to help and form winning combinations.
The shield and weapons is the scatter symbol and key to one of the bonus features.
If the helmet bonus symbol lands on the middle three reels simultaneously then the Gladiator Bonus begins. You are shown a screen with nine helmets made from either bronze, silver or gold and each of the metals is worth a different cash prize. However, if all of the helmets are made from gold then you win the progressive jackpot.
When three, four or five scatter symbols land on the reels you will win 5, 8 or 12 free spins respectively. Before the spins you are asked to pick three from twelve shields to win extra bonus features. This way you can win extra spins, payout multipliers, increased payouts for specific symbols, extra wild symbols, extra scatter symbols, and a nudge feature to help you land more wild symbols.
In addition to the progressive jackpot, Gladiator Road to Rome offers a top payout of 1,000x for landing five of the gladiator symbols along a payline. Commodus can payout up to 500x, Lucilla can payout up to 375x, Proximo can payout up to 250x and Tigris of Gaul can payout up to 250x.
